PRIDE Playlist: Curated by Dua Saleh
This year, as protesters take to the streets to rally against police brutality and systemic racism in the aftermath of George Floyd’s death, the LGBTQ+ community is using Pride Month to highlight and elevate Black voices. This spirit of resistance echoes that of the first Pride ever—Stonewall—which was a riot.
Sudanese-American recording artist, songwriter, poet, and actor Dua Saleh curated a Pride playlist for us, featuring Black artists and tracks from their EP ROSETTA. Here’s what Dua had to say about the project:
“I named my new EP project ROSETTA, inspired by Sister Rosetta Tharpe who was a pioneering queer black artist in the 1930s and 40s. She is the Godmother of Rock and Roll who influenced Little Richard, Chuck Berry, and more. She was known for her flamboyant guitar stylings and stage presence. It was also an open secret that she dated women during a time when homosexuality was criminalized…
